The ‘Nauti’

"The ‘Nauti’ light, is a sophisticated floor lamp with adjustable shade to control light intensity. This mechanism is operated via a 5-position slider located at extended arm height on the shaft, which moves the individual segments. I followed the Lighting Association’s brief to design a decorative luminaire suitable for the retail market but introduced an extra aspect of function to tackle the increase in open plan living and multifunctional spaces.

‘Nauti’ attempts to fulfil this, its outstretched arm and easily adjusted shade, provide both reading and ambient light which enables it to provide a number of different functions within a single room.

The design itself took inspiration from the golden ratio in particular the golden spiral and its occurrence within the nautilus shell. This has been the driving force behind the workings and structure, from the sweeping arc of its pole to the retractable shell like segments.

The result combines the translucent materials of ABS plastic or possibilities for ceramic, with the industrial look of steel and concrete at the base
